BTS becomes the First Foreign Artist to Top Oricon’s Annual Artist Rankings

The Bangtan Boys, popularly known as BTS has created history by becoming the first-ever foreign Artist To Top Oricon’s annual artist rankings. Earlier, BTS became the first foreign group to ever top Oricon’s year-end album chart. It has been noted that BTS is the first after legendary Michael Jackson to achieve this feat after 37 long years. Jackson was ranked in 1984 for his album ‘Thriller’. 

The news broke when Oricon on December 24, named BTS at Japan’s leading music statistics site. The annual rankings are based on the overall sales of an artist’s singles, albums, and DVDs for the whole year, as well as their streaming data.

Oricon compiled sales statistics within Japan from December 28, 2020 to December 20, 2021 for this year’s rankings, and “BTS, THE BEST” was the best-selling album of the year, according to their estimations, with 993,000 copies sold in Japan.

About the top ranked album and the Band

BTS is a South Korean boy band that debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment after forming in 2010.   Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are part of a septet  Their musical approach has expanded to incorporate a wide spectrum of genres after beginning as a hip hop ensemble.

BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history, with over 20 million albums sold on the Gaon Music Chart, and Map of the Soul is the best-selling album in South Korea. They are the first Asian and non-English speaking act to be named (IFPI) Global Recording Artist of the Year, chart on Billboard’s Top Touring Artists of the 2010s, and headline and sell out Wembley and Rose Bowl Stadiums.

BTS, branded “Princes of Pop” and featured on Time’s international cover as “Next Generation Leaders,” have also made the magazine’s rankings of the 25 most important people on the internet and the 100 most influential people in the world.

Six American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, 24 Golden Disk Awards, and nominations for two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award are among the group’s many honours.

BTS’ ‘BTS, THE BEST’ is a Japanese compilation album that comprises 23 songs that the group has released in the Japanese language since 2017. It featured the pre-release music ‘Film Out,’ which was written by Jungkook in collaboration with Back Number, a Japanese rock band.

The original Japanese-language songs ‘Your eyes Tell,’ ‘Crystal Snow,’ Japanese renditions of ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears,’ ‘Fake Love,’ ‘Idol,’ ‘Mic Drop,’ and a Japanese remake of ‘ON,’ ‘Dynamite,’ and more can all be found on this album.

On the great achievement the BTS members commented that they are truly delighted and grateful to claim No. 1 on Oricon’s yearly rankings for 2021. They further believe this is all thanks to ARMY [BTS’s fandom], who are always supporting them. Lastly, they thanked everyone for always giving them unchanging love and support.
