A team of seventh through 10th grade students from Carmel Valley Middle School, Earl Warren Middle School, and Torrey Pines High School excelled in the 2018-2019 FIRST Tech Challenge season, in which students explore STEM through designing, building, programming, and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. The team, called Alpacas, consists of Manav Khanvilkar, Ayush Mithbawkar, Caleb Rowden, Mihika Tiwari, Esha Hindupur, Nandita Kodali, and Amy Peng and is mentored by coaches Digamber Mithbawker and Shashank Khanvilkar and parent volunteers Mayank Tiwari and Norm Rowden.

Alpacas took home two second place and two first place awards in four league matches. They also placed as the third runner up for the Inspire Award and the Collins Aerospace Innovate Award. The team moved on to the regional competition in March, finishing in the top 10. Learn more about the program at www.firstinspires.org/robotics/ftc.
