School Club Serves Communities Near and Far

Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) students Emily Gao, Connie Chen, Alexa Cross, Luke Pusateri, Kaila Hogan, Kiley Hogan, and Eric Lu are giving back to other students in the community through a club they started at school called Tutor Outreach. “My friends and I created this club with the intention of providing tutoring services to those that may not have the financial means to afford a private tutor to help with schoolwork,” Emily said. Every other Saturday morning, club members tutor low-income middle school students at The Preuss School located at UC San Diego during its Saturday Enrichment Academy for students who are struggling in or failing their classes. They help tutor in all subjects including math, language arts, science, and social studies.
“Being able to help these students out has been a life-changing experience for all of us.”
Tutor Outreach club members also participate in service projects, such as holding book drives to donate to students in Africa and raising money for school supply care packages for children in Mexico. “In addition to trying to lessen the educational inequality of our community by tutoring underprivileged students, we also want to do our part in lessening the educational inequality globally,” said Emily. “Being able to help these students out has been a life-changing experience for all of us.”
