Healthy Relationships, Healthy Lives

Kim Marriage and Family Therapy Cares About Emotional and Relational Health

mp_kimfamilytherapy2For Susan Kim, health is holistic. “Just as we care about our physical health, our emotional and relational health are vital aspects of our well-being that also require attention and care,” she explained. As a therapist for the last 25 years, Susan’s goal at Kim Marriage and Family Therapy is to help people experience long-term positive change that leads to happier, healthier, and more meaningful lives.

Susan’s approach to therapy is a strength-based one. She looks at behaviors as adaptive and acknowledges the importance of the behavior even if it is causing challenges. The goal is to find alternate ways of being that are more effective. “We work with patients to find immediate, concrete solutions and address underlying issues that contribute to the difficulties so that patients are more likely to experience long-term positive change rather than a short-term ‘bandaging’ of the situation,” Susan said. To accomplish this, she integrates a number of modalities, including attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, mindfulness practice, and depth psychology.

The counseling practice serves individuals, couples, children, and families. It was especially established to assist step-parents and step-families (or blended families) as they experience unique dynamics and stressors that many people and practitioners are unaware of. “Kim Marriage and Family Therapy strives to repair and restore ruptured relationships so that patients experience a reduction in pain and conflict and feel more at peace and better about themselves and the important people in their lives,” Susan shared. These relationships may be a couple, a parent and child, and even the relationship with oneself. “We provide a sensitive, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space for people to explore struggles within themselves and in their relationships, and to generate solutions that fit their unique circumstances,” Susan said.

“Participating in therapy is an investment in yourself and in your relationships.”

Working with people to help them in their healing is a great privilege for Susan. “I enjoy sharing the moments when my patients recognize the strengths and resources within themselves to move through their difficulties and discover hope and new possibilities that they had not been able to see before,” she expressed. “I am amazed by people’s resilience and their natural tendency towards love.”

Kim Marriage and Family Therapy offers a free monthly Family Matters e-newsletter that contains tips and tools to keep families healthy and happy, and free initial phone consultations to answer any questions that people may have about participating in therapy. Susan also offers presentations to local groups on mental health issues. “While some people may be hesitant to talk about relationship issues and address mental health concerns,” Susan acknowledged, “participating in therapy is an investment in yourself and in your relationships.”
