Mt. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) Kendra Couch Classic brought together eight baseball teams from local high schools – Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Scripps Ranch, Santa Fe Christian, La Jolla Country Day, Bishop’s, and Clairemont – to raise awareness and money for cancer research this past spring. Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy played in the final championship game, with Torrey Pines ultimately emerging as the champions.

Since 2012, MCHS has hosted a “Cancer Game” against another local high school for the same purpose, with this year being the first as a tournament. Players from all eight teams wore jerseys with the names of people who have been affected by cancer and, after the tournament, the jerseys and other items were auctioned off. A total of $24,000 was raised this year – almost doubling the amount raised in the first six years. All proceeds were donated to the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
