Committed To Positive Change

Barrett Smith didn’t waste any time getting involved in his new community after relocating from Texas just two years ago. He joined the Del Mar Rotary Club soon after arriving, and “a whole new world of service opportunities opened up to me,” he said.

Today, Barrett serves as the chair of the Rotary Community Service Committee. “We work with homeless veterans, charter schools, lifeguards, food banks, substance abuse organizations, and a host of other charities around the county with at least one major service project undertaken every month,” Barrett explained.

What began as a couple afternoons a week volunteering with teens quickly became a much larger commitment. Barret now helps with fundraising and community outreach and serves on the Junior Board. “I feel strongly that the kids at these clubhouses have limitless potential and will be the leaders of the next generation,” he shared. “They need someone to ensure they know how great they are.”

Professionally, Barrett has served as a realtor for Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty for the last year. Although he had careers in starting companies and other industries, Barrett acknowledged that he always wanted to be a realtor. He also enjoys spending time with family, playing golf and racquetball, and traveling. His newest hobby is pyrotechnics. “Since I was a small child I’ve been fascinated with fireworks and last year began the process of becoming a licensed pyrotechnician in the State of California,” he said.

Barrett’s commitment to “service above self” is inspired and supported by those around him. “Everything I have been able to accomplish in the last year has been thanks to an indescribable amount of love and support from the wonderful people of this community,” Barrett acknowledged. “I’d encourage anyone searching to make an impact and see positive change to reach out and get involved in this community,” he recommended. “Your volunteering is wanted and needed to help change lives around you.”
