Math Maven

Rachana Madhukara, a 15-year-old sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy, has entered the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair for the past three years with wonderful results. In fact, she is now the secretary of the fair for her school’s Students Association Body. Rachana revealed, “This fair is the perfect venue to express myself scientifically the way I want to: through research, which is a very valuable skill. It lets me present my original work instead of being a typical science competition which, in my opinion, just promotes regurgitating memorized information.”

student_madhukara2Citing mathematics as her favorite subject, Rachana is very involved in her school’s math club. She helps run the annual CCA Math Bonanza, a student math competition. Rachana also runs the Julia Robinson Math Festival in San Diego, and proclaimed, “This festival inspires students to explore the beauty of mathematics through activities that encourage collaborative, creative problem solving. I run this festival so that more kids can experience the richness of mathematics before they are pushed too much into the rote mathematics taught in school.”

When she isn’t honing her math and science skills, Rachana plays the violin and studies Carnatic music. In addition, she is an avid fencer, and has recently discovered yoga. She added, “I also really enjoy tinkering with my 3D printer.”

Though this math maven isn’t sure where she wants to attend college, Rachana admitted, “I think I want to major in mathematics and become a research professor, or just work in the industry. It would also be cool to start a business one day!” Whatever path Rachana takes, she will surely see continued success.
