Math Counts

Carmel Valley Middle School students won the MATHCOUNTS Southern California State Competition against 33 other teams from across the region at UC Irvine. Under the guidance of Coach Snow Shen, the team consists of Lucas Liu, Jeff Ren, Sophie Wu, and Richard Xu. In addition to placing first in the team competition, Sophie Wu also earned third place in the Countdown competition and fourth place in the Individual. “The students have had a lot of fun throughout the competition, from the beginning of their training right up to winning of the state championship,” said Coach Shen. “Their success is a testament to their willingness to challenge themselves and work hard.” The team had previously placed first in the national Fall Start Up contest last fall.

Created in 1983, MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program in which groups of middle school students compete against each other in math-based competitions. The competition series has four levels – school, chapter, state, and national. Each level of competition is comprised of four rounds – Sprint, Target, Team, and Countdown. Between one and 10 students from each school advance to their local chapter competition; over 500 chapter competitions take place throughout the country. Top students from each chapter competition then advance to the state competition. The program eventually culminates in a final national competition. MATHCOUNTS provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests alongside their peers and improve their math competency. For more information go to
