San Diego High School Students Compete for Prestigious Award
Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) student Cameron Chang and Scripps Ranch resident and San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts student Jazley Genovese won Best Actor and Best Actress at the Ben Vereen Awards competition at the Balboa Theatre in May. Adam Trubitt of Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) and Constantine Mickens of CCA were among the nominees for Best Actor, while Linsey Cryzewicz of SRHS and Samantha Tullie of CCA were among nominees for Best Actress.
The Ben Vereen Awards selects the best of high school musical theater in San Diego County in order to present talented young performers with a scholarship opportunity to advance their education and careers in musical theater. The show featured inspiring performances by the 20 Best Actor/Best Actress nominees. Cameron and Jazley went on to represent the San Diego region at the 8th Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards (Jimmy Awards) in New York City. They made their debut on a Broadway stage following nine days of rehearsals and private coaching. Cameron went on to be selected as one of the top four finalists for Best Actor at the Jimmy Awards in June, and received a $2,500 scholarship.
“I was thrilled to have Cameron and Jazley represent Broadway/San Diego and Nederlander as our national finalists,” said BSD Vice President and Ben Vereen Awards Producer Joe Kobryner. “Cameron has been involved with the BVA for all three years, and Jazley was one of the most unique talents that we’ve had in our local competition.”
