92130 resident Michael Perrone and friend Julio Troche won awards in the San Diego County Fair’s Homemade Wine Competition. The duo’s inaugural Syrah earned a gold medal in the red wine division while their Merlot-Syrah received a gold medal in the blended red wine division and best in class honors.

“I grew up helping my dad and grandfather make wine. After my grandfather passed in 2011, I wanted to continue the tradition and try my hand at making wine,” shared Michael. “Because Julio shared my taste in wine, I recruited him and we started making wine in my garage three years ago.” Michael and Julio started an exclusive wine club and in 2014 they expanded their wine production to more than 600 bottles. When they are not making wine, Michael is the director of logistics for the U.S. Navy and Julio is the principal of Landscape Solutions Warehouse.

The competition was open to all amateur winemakers 21 years and older. This year there were 313 entries in eight divisions. Discover more at www.sdfair.com.
