STEAM+ Premier Family Night
DMUSD Families Visit Campuses To Learn About New Learning Approach
The Del Mar Unified School District (DUMSD) recently made a huge effort to introduce parents to STEAM+, their new approach of integrated learning. This method integrates traditional subject matter, allowing students the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired or are still developing to solve tasks that relate to relevant, real-world experiences. To help families develop a better understanding of their educational programs, DMUSD held the STEAM+ Premier Family Night across each of their school sites on one night. Families were able to interact with credentialed specialists and teachers to experience how their children are learning firsthand.
At each school, teams prepared a host of different activities for families to participate in. Families were able to code video games to share with others, design and build small vehicles to learn about energy, and even fashion electric circuits from Play-Doh, batteries, and wire. Of her school’s experience that night, Carmel Del Mar School Principal Jessica Morales shared, “The first annual STEAM+ Family Night at Carmel Del Mar School exhibited one of those magical nights where you see your school community come together to learn and have fun while doing so. As I left the night, I couldn’t help but feel proud of this event and how it energized our community about integrated learning.”
STEAM+, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, is made possible through the support of the district and the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF). “STEAM+ Family Premier Night was such an auspicious occasion on two fronts!,” said DMSEF President Ty Humes. “First, it highlighted the brand new STEAM+ initiative that DMUSD has deployed this year, and its impact on the continued success of education in our district. Second, simultaneously, the district succeeded in bringing together all eight schools for one event at their respective campuses. It is such a great time to be a part of this district. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Foundation during this time of celebration.”
