The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) partnered with PFLAG San Diego County to recognize deserving LGBTQ students for their exemplary academic achievements and leadership vision at the 2016 Launching Leaders Scholarship Awards Luncheon in May. The students shared an award of $15,000. Among the honorees was Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) student Ash Matheson, who earned the 2016 Richard P. Geyer Memorial Ethics Scholarship.

Ash was recognized for founding the nonprofit Building Bridges as a CCA sophomore. The organization is dedicated to helping middle and high school students with special needs bond with peer mentors and focus on collaborative work in a variety of artistic disciplines, including visual arts, acting, dance, and music. Ash was inspired to pursue this project after realizing their older brother Jacob, who lives with cerebral palsy and autism, could benefit from having a creative outlet. Learn more at
