Kathy Krevat Promotes the Craft of Writing
From Marketing to Mysteries
What began as a hobby for Kathy Krevat has become her road to best-selling author. Author of the Chocolate Covered Mystery series, Kathy, a Carmel Valley resident since 1999, has found her passion in a writing career and supporting art education for youth.
Kathy originally worked in marketing and public relations. She grew up in western Pennsylvania and started her career in New York City and Silicon Valley. Once her daughters were born, Kathy transitioned to the role of stay-at-home mom. “I started writing as a hobby when my youngest daughter began attending preschool five mornings a week (anything to avoid housework!) thinking I would have all kinds of time to write,” she explained. “I also thought that since I knew how to write ad copy, writing a book would be easy. I was so wrong!”
Kathy quickly realized she would have to learn the craft of writing a novel, as well as the publishing business. She found great support in attending writing groups and workshops and reading books on writing. “There are so many opportunities to learn, from online workshops to classes and conferences to writing blogs to craft books,” Kathy shared. “If you keep at it, and keep learning, you will conquer those areas that need help and you will get better.”
To support those learning the craft, Kathy is involved with the Canyon Crest Academy Writers’ Conference held every February. It’s the only free writing conference for high school students in the country. “Our speakers are not only successful writing professionals but also excellent presenters who love to come back year after year to interact with students who love writing so much they are willing to spend their free Saturday learning about it,” Kathy acknowledged. She also serves as vice president of the Playwrights Project, an organization promoting literacy, communication, and creativity through play-writing programs and theater productions.
Publishing under her pen name, Kathy Aarons, her third book of the series, Behind Chocolate Bars, will be out in October 2016. “In the series, Chocolatier Michelle Serrano and bookstore owner Erica Russell track down murderers while running their shop, Chocolates and Chapters,” she shared. Kathy is also drafting a proposal for a new mystery series, a zombie movie script, and outlining plans for a young adult book. Her advice for writers is one she models well, “Keep learning and keep writing!”
