The Gonzalez Canyon Friends Group, a subgroup of the nonprofit San Diego Canyonlands (SDC), is made up of local volunteers who come together to take care of local trails. Recently, they outdid themselves by significantly improving the appearance and functionality of the trail bordering Torrey Pines Dog Park. The project, funded largely by donors, improves safety by separating trail users from the off-leash dog park area. Miranda Hyldahl, SDC Programs and Outreach Coordinator, was told by the project’s contractor, “At least 20 people approached us to ask what we were doing. Once we explained, every person was excited and grateful for the improvements.”

For those interested in helping to improve local trails, the Friends Group has routine stewardship events the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., meeting at the Sword Way trail head. To learn more contact Miranda at miranda@sdcanyonlands.org or visit www.sdcanyonlands.org.
