Outpost Summer Camps Have a Unique Take
on a Traditional Experience

by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by Outpost Summer Camps

The summer camp experience is a powerful developmental opportunity for American children, with an over-100-year history. “When I moved to San Diego in 2001 to start this camp,” explained Stuart Jones, Outpost Summer Camp Director and Owner, “there were not a lot of quality summer camp opportunities for local children.” The purpose of Outpost Summer Camps, serving Carmel Valley and surrounding communities for 15 seasons, is to provide the best of this enduring tradition. The program offers three-week sessions for three different age groups: “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different groups,” Stuart said, “but all share in the same philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and coming from the minds of the campers themselves.”

outpost_3

Outpost Summer Camp programs run between mid-June and mid-August and are held in different locations, according to age group, in Poway and PQ. It is 100 percent outdoors and device free. “We call it ‘outside and unplugged,’” Stuart smiled. “We keep our camp groups very small with no more than 12 campers per group, our sessions are three weeks long (providing an opportunity for everyone to feel connected and form lasting relationships), and we offer door-to-door transportation.” Outpost also has a very small staff to camper ratio, with generally one counselor to six campers, and sometimes one to four.

outpost_1

Outpost’s creative day camp format provides a similar feeling to an overnight, traditional summer camp, which is the hallmark of the Outpost program. Campers can learn names, get comfortable with routines, make and keep friends, learn songs and games, and feel completely at home. This differs from typical week-long, single-activity focused camps in the area. Children participate in a wide variety of camp activities – for example, in the Senior Outpost program – rock climbing, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, conquering a ropes course, or other high adventure activities.

As longtime child development professionals, Stuart and his wife Kelly have worked hard to create an atmosphere at Outpost to enrich and develop the social, emotional, and physical skills of each camper. They hire, train, and retain their director team from their best counselors, most of whom have invested 8 to 10 years in the organization. They’ve been accredited by the American Camp Association since inception, which requires a camp to meet or exceed 300+ standards of superiority and safety. “Finally,” Stuart shared, “camp professionals from all over the country have visited our program, as we’ve developed a high-quality reputation for our traditional programming and staff training excellence nationwide.”

Therapeutic Literacy Center

tlc_logoWhile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in.

While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum.

TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director.

Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200.

The Triple Talent Camp is also offerered, combining acting, singing, and dance for those looking to pursue a career in the industry.

camp_rapa2Themed summer camps can range from four to five days depending on the dancer’s age group, with affordable half-day options available for as low as $150 for the entire camp. Depending on which theme they choose – some options include Disney, Princess, Grease, Hairspray, etc. – dancers can dress up, have tea parties, make crafts and costumes, and even have the opportunity to sing and act. For students looking to really challenge themselves this summer, intensives, such as the Bolshoi Ballet Intensive, Boot Camps, and Pure Technique Camps, provide the opportunity for students to excel along with speciality workshops and masterclasses with celebrity choreographers and teachers.

“At RAPA, we have created a summer camp program to suit everyone’s needs, schedules, and affordability,” said Owner and Director Francine Garton. “Our students have so much fun, are inspired each and every day, make new friends, and grow in so many ways whether it is in technical ability, confidence, or just stepping out of their comfort zone.” RAPA’s programs are led by experienced teachers that nurture campers and go above and beyond to ensure each camp is structured around the children’s needs. Whether your child is a beginner looking to learn the basics, or more advanced with a desire to master technical skills, RAPA’s summer programs offer choices for everyone. CodeRev Kids

camp_coderevlogoWith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.”

CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of ten different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV.

Evan has been teaching STEAM for 14 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John Stuppy believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science.
