The Horse Rescuer

Andrea Younghusband Choy has called Carmel Valley home for about 12 years now along with her husband and two sons (ages 10 and 6). Originally from Vancouver, British Colombia, Andrea grew up around horses, and recalled, “My parents instilled a love of nature and the outdoors in me, and I really respect and appreciate animals, the environment, and the peace that both provide. I was always that child who was finding strays or injured animals that I’d either nurse back to health or take to an animal rescue.”

Eager for her own sons to experience the joy of being around animals (specifically horses), Andrea purchased a “Riding Session Groupon” for them last year at the Laughing Pony Rescue ranch, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that rescues and rehabilitates horses in Rancho Santa Fe, and that was when her volunteering trajectory was set. Andrea exclaimed, “We took the boys to the ranch on a Thursday, and I began my horse rescue volunteering career the following Monday! I love this place, and what it stands for. It’s important to me to help those that don’t have a voice of their own, and to show these beautiful animals that they are special.”

Some of Andrea’s volunteering tasks include preparing the horses’ daily supplements, hanging the hay bags, mucking the stalls, grooming and exercising the horses, assisting with the riding sessions, and even helping with the birthday parties on the ranch. Andrea is also on the marketing committee, conceiving new ideas to raise funds and increase awareness about the nonprofit. She elaborated, “One of the ideas I came up with was to have horseshoes as souvenirs! I went to various ranches, collected the horseshoes, cleaned them up, spray painted them, and made tags for them with our name and logo.”

The Laughing Pony Rescue is always looking for new organizations to partner with, such as those that benefit individuals with Down syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and autism. The nonprofit also aims to create a facility where disabled children and adults can participate in therapeutic programs that feature the rescued horses. Andrea stated, “I’m hoping that a few kind and generous souls will read about our rescue and be inspired to become involved. We welcome sponsors and donations. I’m hoping to touch the heart of a local resident who has the heart for what we are doing and can financially assist Laughing Pony Rescue in its efforts to save and rehabilitate unwanted and abused horses – and to find them their forever homes!”
