Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has recently awarded Big Sister of the Year for the State of California to Katie Nielsen. Matched Aug. 16, 2006, Katie has been an outstanding Big Sister to her Little Candra Esquivel for nearly a decade. Nominations for California Big of the Year come from all 17 agencies across the state. Candidates are chosen from thousands of volunteers. This is the first time since 2005 a Big of the Year has come from San Diego County. “Katie is an exemplary role model of what it means to be a Big Sister. Her commitment to Candra and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County program is heartfelt, genuine, and inspiring,” said Deborah Condon, BBBS of San Diego County President and CEO. Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children achieve measurable positive outcomes, including educational success; avoidance of risky behaviors; higher aspirations; greater confidence; and healthier relationships.
