It’s Cookie Time
Meet Cindy Mayers,
the Regional Manager for Girl Scout Cookies
We all love that time of year when we can purchase those delicious Girl Scout cookies. But did you know there is a Carmel Valley mom, named Cindy Mayers, who tirelessly volunteers behind the scenes to ensure that those coveted boxes of cookies are all properly dispensed and accounted for? As the product sales volunteer regional manager for the Canyon Trails region, Cindy oversees seven service units for not only the Girl Scout Cookie Program, but also the Fall Nut Sale.
It all began for Cindy when her daughter, Sydney, joined the Girl Scouts in the first grade (Sydney is now a college student at Cal State Monterey Bay). Cindy recalled, “I started by just being a supportive parent in the troop, helping with field trips or meetings. Eventually I became the troop’s Cookie Manager.”
When her second daughter, Shayla, joined her own Girl Scout troop in kindergarten (Shayla is now a sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy), Cindy volunteered to be the troop leader – and ten years later, she still is! That led to her branching out into other aspects of the Carmel Valley Girl Scouts; she’s been an encampment coordinator, a Thinking Day coordinator, a troop organizer and of course the service unit cookie coordinator.
Cindy reminded us, “All the proceeds from the cookie sales stay in San Diego County to benefit all local Girl Scouts.” The girls in her daughter’s troop are currently benefitting by working hard for their Gold Awards, the highest achievement in girl scouting. Cindy added, “Mentoring the girls who have come in and out of my troop is my biggest accomplishment in volunteering with the Girl Scouts.”
This stay-at-home mom has had ample opportunities to feel that sense of accomplishment. In addition to assisting the Girl Scouts, Cindy has also made a difference by helping at the local schools. She shared, “I’ve been active in the PTA at Carmel Creek and Solana Pacific schools. I was a member and President of the School Site Council, and was involved in PTA committees as the VP of Membership, the Vice President and the President.”
Happy to volunteer when needed, especially for the Girl Scouts, Cindy encourages others to do the same. She exclaimed, “Whether you want to be a leader or just help with an event, the Girls Scouts can always use volunteers! Visit www.sdgirlscouts.org/volunteer for more information.”
