CDMES Teacher Recently Awarded Music Honor
Recently, Cinda Peck, the music teacher for Carmel Del Mar Elementary School (CDMES), was honored with the 2013 Profile in Music Award from the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. She revealed, “I was nominated by a former student, and that makes it even more special.” From a very early age, Cinda enjoyed music. In second grade, she studied piano, added the clarinet in fifth, vocal music in junior high and participated in band and orchestra through high school. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Music Education and Music Therapy and began as a part-time music aide at Del Mar Hills. To secure a permanent position, Cinda obtained her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Point Loma University. She began as a sixth grade substitute at CDMES before accepting a fifth grade teaching position. Three years later, when the district opened up music positions to credentialed teachers, Cinda began teaching music full time. Cinda shared, “I love CDMES just as I love our neighborhood. It’s where my family grew up and my loyalties will always be.”
Cinda Peck and her husband, Rod, moved to Creek Park Estates, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Carmel Valley, 28 years ago, back when chaparral and dirt roads abounded. They’ve enjoyed watching their two children, neighborhood, schools and community grow.
Hoping her students remain dreamers and believers of themselves, Cinda’s goal has been to give them a life-long love of music. Each year some lessons are brought to performance level, where family and friends can celebrate successes. CDMES students attend dress rehearsals, which fosters community. Students support each other, and great performances often bring out new “stars.” She reminds her students to give her front row seats and back stage passes if they ever become famous.
Cinda would like to thank the many parents who have participated in fundraisers that allowed the purchase of stage lighting, a quality sound system and most of the instruments the students use. Her husband Rod added Cinda worked tirelessly to include every child, often made costumes and scenery, was awarded teacher of the year in 2003, and sang the National Anthem at several Padres games.
For fun, Cinda attends musical theater performances, sings in the La Jolla Symphony Chorus, gardens, and entertains family and friends. She even water skis at least once a year to prove she still can!
